description:
B vitamins are water-soluble, not stored in body (except B12). B6 helps a variety of enzymes essential for protein metabolism, as well as red blood cell metabolism. The body also needs B6 to make hemoglobin which carries oxygen to tissues within red blood cells. B6 works with zinc closely in the body.
Vitamin B6 is good for:
Reduce artery damage by reducing blood levels of homocysteine. By helping the lymphoid organs which make the white blood cells, vitamin B6 is important to the immune system.
dosage:
Over age 50: Men:1.7mg/day Women:1.5mg/day
30-50: Men & Women: 1.3mg/day
deficiency symptoms:
insomnia, anemia, depression, muscle weakness, kidney stones, dermatitis(skin inflammation), stiffness and swellings of fingers (turn white in severe cases), diseases of nervous and digestive systems.
warnings:
More than 50-100mg/day may lead to nerve damage in arms and legs.
Children treated with theophylline for asthma may need B6 supplement.
